There is curiosity about how they live, derision about their belief but there is no respect for their traditional knowledge gained from close proximity to nature. The climate change debate like all other issues is a one way monologue emanating from the rich and powerful. At the other end of the spectrum are the indigenous communities. Are they aware of the problem? Do they have solutions? We make an attempt to find out.

Endangered tribals up against the terror of Vedanta

The British mining company Vedanta is pushing ahead with plans for an open-cast mine in the Indian state of Orissa to extract bauxite from the Niyamgiri Hills, a forested mountain range inhabited for centuries by the Dongaria Kondh tribal people. The move is being fiercely resisted by the Dongaria Kondh, who regard the mountain peak as sacred. They are receiving widespread support, at home and abroad, for their struggle.

Towards Self Reliant Villages

In the guise of “feeding the poor and hungry” a model of industrial agriculture was proposed by the Western world. In the year 1960 the Indian government succumbed to pressure and adopted it. What is meant essentially was to promote two cereals, rice and wheat, at the expense of other food crops like millets, cereals and pulses. The system of mono cropping emerged and to increase yield land devoted to other agricultural produce was shifted to the above two types of grains.
